Matthew Alcala, PsyD
Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Dr. Matthew Alcala takes a strength-based approach to helping patients better understand and work through the internal and external challenges that affect their health and wellness. He believes that every patient is a collection of the identities and experiences that shape their place in the world as well as in the therapy room. He uses cognitive behavioral techniques to guide and empower patients to learn healthier ways to accept the challenges they cannot change and to help them find ways to work through the challenges they believe they can change.
Dr. Alcala has experience treating patients with a wide range of diagnoses, including schizophrenia spectrum disorders, dual diagnoses with substance use disorders, and mood disorders. Additionally, he has specialized training and experience working with transgender and non-binary clients who are undergoing gender affirming hormone treatment and preparing for gender affirming surgery. He also was trained and is experienced in assessing and treating patients with spinal cord injuries as well as patients with epilepsy.
Education & Experience
Dr. Alcala holds a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from University of La Verne. His dissertation research examined the relationship between experiences of intersectional discrimination and substance use risk among lesbian, gay, and bisexual people of color. He has also taught community college courses in introductory psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, statistics, and research methods. His clinical expertise includes work with a broad range of populations including LGBTQ+ individuals, Spanish-speaking individuals, transition-age youth, and college students.
